The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) infused holiday cheer this week by distributing Christmas gifts to approximately 600 children associated with the Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) throughout the country. The joyous initiative was part of PRF’s Annual Christmas Gift and Stationery Drive, with children in Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, Rakiraki, and Labasa all receiving presents.
The event was filled with laughter and excitement, embodying the true spirit of the festive season. PRF’s founder, Amitesh Deo, emphasized that the drive serves as a reminder to adults of the pure happiness and imagination found in childhood, even in challenging times. Deo shared that this initiative aims to convey the essence of Christmas—spreading joy and happiness, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding us.
He stated, “It was all smiles and excitement. The delight in their eyes reminded us of why this initiative exists—to ensure their Christmas is as magical as any other.” Launched in 2022, this initiative goes beyond merely distributing gifts; it seeks to provide hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging to children and families who often feel overlooked.
Deo noted the significant role CPR plays in Fiji’s recycling ecosystem by collecting recyclables from public areas and dumpsites, contributing remarkably to sustainable waste management despite immense difficulties. Many of these families struggle with poverty, prioritizing basic needs over school supplies and toys. CPR often finds discarded items to share with their children during Christmas, making this initiative a vital lift from their burdens, ensuring every child feels valued during the holiday.
The campaign also aims to supply essential school stationery along with toys to equip the children for the new school year. Deo added, “This isn’t just about gifts; it’s about restoring dignity to these families and ensuring their children feel cherished. These families are vital to our recycling efforts, and it is time society acknowledges and supports them.”
PRF expressed profound gratitude to numerous supporters who made this drive possible, including Pacific Energy, Vinod Patel & Company Ltd, and several local councils and organizations. Notably, this year marks a significant expansion of the drive’s reach, as it reached Labasa for the first time, enhancing its positive impact throughout Fiji.
This heartwarming initiative not only spreads joy during this festive season but also emphasizes the importance of community support and inclusivity. It underscores a collective responsibility to uplift the vulnerable, ensuring that the spirit of Christmas resonates with hope and connection.
