More than 700 children from families involved in Fiji’s informal recycling sector have received Christmas gifts and stationery as part of the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s (PRF) fourth annual Christmas Gift and Stationery Drive. This initiative aims to bring dignity and recognition to some of the country’s most marginalized workers, ensuring that children from these families are not overlooked during the festive season.

The Christmas drive specifically targeted children of Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) located in Vunato and Lautoka, as well as those in Maururu, Ba, Sigatoka, Rakiraki, and Labasa. Many of these families struggle to meet daily needs, and this initiative provided them with a much-needed boost during the holidays.

Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond simply distributing gifts. He highlighted the critical role CPR plays in Fiji’s waste management system, noting that their vital contributions are often unrecognized. The initiative has grown to become one of Fiji’s oldest grassroots social protection programs, supporting informal recycling communities for four years.

Deo pointed out that many families involved in CPR face challenges during Christmas, often lacking basic festive treats. He underscored the importance of recognizing the environmental stewardship and economic contributions of CPR workers, stating, “Their children deserve to feel proud of the work their parents do.”

The handover events for the gifts were attended by notable figures, including Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Speaker Lenora Qereqeretabua, Permanent Secretary for Environment Dr. Sivendra Michael, and local council representatives from Ba Town Council and Lautoka City Council.

This year’s drive was supported by a broad network of partners, demonstrating the community’s collective commitment to amplifying the voices and needs of informal recyclers. The positive impact of this initiative underscores the importance of social responsibility and community support, ensuring that no child is left behind during the festive season.
