The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) has brought joy to the festive season by distributing Christmas gifts to approximately 600 children from the Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) across Fiji. This annual initiative, known as the Christmas Gift and Stationery Drive, saw children in Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, Rakiraki, and Labasa receive their gifts this week, filling their faces with excitement and laughter.
PRF Founder Amitesh Deo emphasized that this drive serves as a poignant reminder to adults of the joys of childhood and the importance of imagination and hope, especially during difficult times. He highlighted that the goal is to spread joy and happiness, regardless of the challenges facing the world.
“Seeing the delight in their eyes reinforced the mission of this initiative—to make their Christmas as magical as possible,” said Deo.
Initiated in 2022, the drive aims to provide not only gifts but also a sense of hope, dignity, and belonging to children and families who are often forgotten. CPRs play a vital role in Fiji’s recycling ecosystem by collecting recyclables from dumpsites and public areas while navigating various difficulties. Deo pointed out that many families face poverty, where basic necessities often overshadow the need for school supplies or toys. This initiative alleviates some of that burden by ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, receives a Christmas gift.
This year’s drive aims to provide children with not just toys but also essential school stationery, which will help them prepare for the upcoming school year. Deo articulated the importance of restoring dignity to families and ensuring their children feel valued. He urged society to recognize and support these hardworking families, reminding everyone that the gifts they give can represent hope and acknowledgment.
PRF expressed deep gratitude towards numerous generous partners and individuals who have supported the initiative, which expanded its reach to Labasa for the first time this year, thereby increasing its positive impact throughout Fiji.
This heartwarming initiative reflects the spirit of giving, underscoring that Christmas is not solely about material gifts but about the love and recognition that brings hope to those in need. It showcases the ability of communities to come together and uplift each other, fostering a brighter future for the next generation.
