In the past 72 hours, authorities recorded a total of 934 traffic violations, primarily attributed to the heightened traffic during the Christmas shopping rush. Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu stated that many drivers were cited for basic road rule infractions, with minor offenses being the most common.
Of the violations, 440 individuals received citations for minor offenses while 311 were penalized for speeding. ACP Driu emphasized that speeding remains a significant factor in accidents, urging all drivers to adhere to speed limits to enhance road safety. Other violations included 58 instances of careless driving, 51 cases each for failing to produce a driving license and not wearing seat belts, and 10 drivers penalized for carrying excess passengers. Additionally, eight drivers were caught using mobile phones while driving, and five had expired driving licenses.
Driu reiterated the importance of creating traffic awareness, encouraging drivers to comply with road rules and maintain proper documentation. A notable concern was the arrest of 23 drivers for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
Looking ahead, ACP Driu mentioned that traffic officers would continue to monitor road activity, especially as travel increases during this festive period. He advised the public to plan their journeys carefully, ensuring they get adequate rest and limit alcohol consumption if they intend to drive. Checkpoints will remain active to ensure safety and security on the roads.
This focus on road safety and adherence to traffic laws reflects a commitment to protecting the community, especially during such busy times. It serves as a reminder to all drivers that responsible behavior on the road contributes to everyone’s safety and the prevention of accidents.
