In the past 72 hours, there have been a significant number of traffic infringements, totaling 934. This uptick in violations is largely attributed to the Christmas shopping rush, prompting increased scrutiny on the roads.
Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu highlighted that the majority of these infractions were minor offenses. Specifically, 440 individuals were cited for minor offenses, while 311 received tickets for speeding. Driu emphasized that speeding remains the leading cause of accidents, urging drivers to adhere to speed limits for their safety and the safety of others.
Additional infractions included 58 drivers charged with careless driving, and 51 each for failing to carry a driving license and not wearing seat belts. The report also noted 10 instances of drivers carrying excess passengers, 8 for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 for operating a vehicle with an expired license.
In a proactive stance, ACP Driu mentioned ongoing efforts to promote traffic awareness and ensure drivers comply with road regulations. He called for proper documentation to be readily available during traffic stops. Importantly, authorities have arrested 23 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Looking ahead, ACP Driu advised travelers to plan their trips carefully, ensure they are well-rested, and limit alcohol consumption before driving. Traffic officers will continue to monitor road activity, with checkpoints in place to enhance safety and security for all road users.
This proactive approach by the police highlights a commitment to road safety during a busy time of year, encouraging responsible driving and awareness among all motorists.
In summary, while the holiday season has led to an increase in traffic violations, the consistent efforts of law enforcement to promote safety can lead to a more secure driving environment for everyone.
