Chinese investors need more convincing to engage with Vatukoula Gold Mines. This message came from the mine’s representatives after a Chinese delegation met with government officials following their investigation of the Vatukoula site. According to Ian He, a spokesman for Vatukoula Gold, the delegation included representatives who have previously invested in an Australian mining operation.
He noted that their visit to Fiji was prompted by an invitation from Vatukoula to explore the investment climate. However, He emphasized that substantial efforts would be required to persuade them to invest in Vatukoula.
The visit was part of the delegation’s tour of Australia. The situation gained attention after online influencer Alex Forwood raised questions to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo regarding a mining project at Mt Kasi.
The government has permitted Vatukoula Gold to conduct mineral exploration at Mt Kasi, but progress has stalled due to opposition from local landowners in Macuata.
