China’s ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the importance of the Chinese community’s role in contributing to the development of Fiji during a speech at the Mid-Autumn Festival and China’s National Day celebration in Suva. Reflecting on the history of Chinese immigration to Fiji, he noted that Chinese ancestors arrived in 1855 and have since played a significant role in the nation’s economic and social progress.
Zhou highlighted that next year will mark two significant anniversaries: the 50th year of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji and the 170th anniversary of Chinese arrival in Fiji. He urged the Chinese community to enhance their contributions to Fiji’s development and to maintain both diligence and cooperation with all ethnic groups to foster a better future.
Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, also acknowledged the vital role of the Chinese farming community, recognizing their contributions to food security and agriculture in Fiji. He expressed gratitude for their efforts in cultivating local crops and enhancing domestic agricultural exports.
Jenny Seeto, President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, highlighted that the upcoming anniversary would mark a significant milestone for the Chinese community, affirming their impactful role in shaping Fiji’s social and economic landscape.
