Coach Branko Ivankovic remains optimistic about China’s prospects for World Cup qualification, asserting that hopes are still alive despite recent back-to-back losses to Saudi Arabia and Australia, leaving them at the bottom of Asian qualifying Group C. The expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams for the upcoming 2026 tournament has invigorated enthusiasm within the Chinese squad, which seeks a return to the finals for the first time since 2002.

During the March international window, China narrowly missed securing a point against Australia, ultimately succumbing to a 1-0 defeat in Riyadh, followed by a disappointing 2-0 loss at home to the Socceroos in Hangzhou. Ivankovic stressed the significance of the forthcoming June matches against Indonesia and Bahrain, declaring, “The next two matches are the key. We must fight for victories.”

China’s match against Indonesia is scheduled for June 5 in Jakarta, where they will aim to close a three-point gap, with Indonesia currently holding fourth place. Following that, they will play host to Bahrain, who is tied on points with China. Ivankovic expressed disappointment over the inability to convert opportunities in recent games but is optimistic about improvements as key players return from injury and suspension.

A silver lining amidst these setbacks is that, despite currently sitting at the bottom of the group, there remains a path to the World Cup finals through subsequent qualifying rounds. With renewed focus and the anticipated return of crucial players like Lin Liangming and Wang Shangyuan, the team’s potential to revive their campaign is promising.

This determination reflects a wider trend in Asian football, where nations are increasingly striving for World Cup qualification, showcasing the resilience and competitive spirit of teams from the region. As they embark on this pivotal juncture, the hope remains that China can rise to the challenge and turn their campaign around.
