Chinese Ambassador Zhou Jian has made a significant donation to the people of Lau, following the installation of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara as the Tui Nayau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau. The contribution, valued at approximately $100,000, includes solar street lights, household solar facilities, and a minivan aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and improving the quality of life in the region.
During the donation ceremony, Ambassador Jian emphasized that this initiative reflects China’s ongoing commitment to support rural revitalization and sustainable development in Fiji. He reiterated the importance of enhancing livelihoods in the Lau community, aligning with Fiji’s efforts to combat climate change—an issue that poses a significant threat to Pacific island nations.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who witnessed the donation, previously acknowledged during a trip to China the remarkable progress made by the country in poverty alleviation and rural development.
Ambassador Jian expressed confidence that the initiatives implemented through this collaboration could lead to meaningful improvements in the resiliency of rural communities within Fiji.
