The third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has issued a communique detailing the strategic direction for the nation’s economic growth, drawing significant interest from economists and specialists worldwide.
Recently, CGTN hosted a special program to gauge reactions from experts in the Pacific region. Participants included Dr. Joseph Veramu, an economist and consultant at Fiji National University, and Dr. Michael Yang, secretary-general of the South Pacific Islands Institute of Asian Studies.
Experts highlighted that China’s ongoing institutional opening presents promising opportunities for Pacific nations. David Mahon, Executive Chairman of Mahon China Investment Management, emphasized the importance of declaring this openness to investment, aiming to correct longstanding misconceptions about China’s intentions. However, he noted the necessity for clarity regarding which sectors are available to foreign investors.
Over the past two decades, Pacific island countries have seen a notable increase in Chinese investments, a trend Dr. Mahon pointed out occurs in a region that has largely been overlooked by the United States.
