China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, recently addressed the media in Suva regarding the ongoing US-China trade war, which he attributes largely to the United States’ recent tariff increases as part of its economic policies. At the briefing, Zhou emphasized that China’s position remains open for dialogue, but that any talks must be rooted in mutual respect and equality. He stated, “If the US wants to talk, it has to let the people see that it is ready to treat others with dignity, equality, and mutual benefit.”
Zhou criticized the US for its aggressive trade tactics, describing the recent imposition of tariffs as “reckless” and a form of unilateral economic bullying. He outlined how the United States has slapped significant tariffs on imports from various nations, including a 32% tariff on Fijian exports, which poses grave concerns for smaller economies.
The ambassador highlighted the importance of recognizing the benefits both nations have gained from their trade relationship, pointing out that trade between the US and China has dramatically increased over the past decades. For instance, he noted that in 2022, American companies in China generated a staggering $490.52 billion in sales while Chinese companies in the US only accounted for $78.64 billion. This data suggests a more complex and reciprocal trade dynamic than the narrative of the US being a victim in trade relations with China.
Moreover, Zhou emphasized that the US’s tariff strategies do not only affect China but also harm developing nations like Fiji, which rely heavily on exports such as kava and seafood. He implored Fiji and other Pacific nations to unite against economic bullying, arguing that the current climate poses risks to global economic stability and trade rules.
He asserted that China seeks to collaborate on initiatives that could enhance economic partnerships and benefit both nations, particularly as bilateral trade reached $534 million in 2024. Zhou proposed deeper cooperation in traditional areas like agriculture and fisheries, alongside newer fields such as green development and e-commerce.
Zhou’s firm stance against US tariffs, while advocating for fairness and multilateral cooperation, reflects a broader sentiment from recent articles which reaffirm the significance of smaller nations’ roles in global trade discussions. Despite the challenges posed by US trade policies, Fiji’s government is actively seeking to diversify its economic partnerships, indicating a resilient approach amidst adversity.
