China’s ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, has urged the Chinese community in Fiji to enhance their contributions to the nation’s development. Speaking at the Mid-Autumn Festival and China’s National Day celebration in Suva, Mr. Zhou reflected on the historical presence of the Chinese in Fiji and their key role in nation-building.
He noted that Chinese ancestors arrived in Fiji in 1855 and have since established strong bonds with the Fijian people, significantly contributing to the country’s social and economic progress over nearly 170 years. Mr. Zhou highlighted that next year will mark both the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, as well as the 170th anniversary of Chinese settlement in Fiji.
On this significant occasion, Mr. Zhou expressed his hope for the Chinese community to intensify their efforts in fostering Fiji’s growth, emphasizing that a fulfilling life comes from hard work and cooperation. He encouraged everyone to cherish their adopted homeland while remembering their roots, advocating for continued diligence, unity, and lawful collaboration with all ethnic groups in Fiji.
In alignment with the Mid-Autumn Festival’s themes of harvest and family, Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere acknowledged the vital contributions of Chinese farmers to the nation’s food security and agriculture. He praised the efforts of the Chinese farming community for providing local produce and enhancing agricultural exports, wishing them a bountiful harvest this season.
Jenny Seeto, president of the Chinese Association of Fiji, remarked that next year’s anniversary will be a historic turning point for the Chinese community. She emphasized their impactful role in Fiji’s development, noting that despite their small numbers, they have consistently contributed to the social and economic landscape of the nation.
