China’s ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, has urged the Chinese community in Fiji to enhance their contributions to the country’s development. Speaking at the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival and China’s National Day in Suva, Mr. Zhou reflected on the history of Chinese migration to Fiji and highlighted the ongoing impact of the Chinese community on the nation.
In his address, he noted, “In 1855, our ancestors crossed the sea to become part of the multi-ethnic Fijian family.” He emphasized that for almost 170 years, Chinese individuals in Fiji have coexisted with local populations, fostering deep friendships and aiding in the nation’s economic and social progress.
With next year marking the 50-year milestone of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, as well as the 170th anniversary of the first Chinese arrival in Fiji, Mr. Zhou expressed his hopes for greater engagement. “A good life is earned through hard work. A bright future is created through cooperation,” he stated, urging the community to cherish their home in Fiji while honoring their roots. He called for ongoing collaboration across ethnic groups and stressed the importance of resilience, unity, and inclusivity in their contributions to the development of Fiji.
During the same festivities, Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere recognized the vital role of Chinese farmers in ensuring food security and advancing local agriculture. He expressed gratitude to the Chinese farming community for their contributions to domestic food production and agricultural exports, wishing them a successful harvest season.
Jenny Seeto, president of the Chinese Association of Fiji, highlighted the significance of the upcoming 170th anniversary of Chinese settlement in Fiji as a historic moment for the community. She remarked, “We are a small but vibrant community, and we have played a defining role in the development of Fiji and continue to influence its social and economic landscape.”
