The Fijiana Sevens Team received a generous donation of $10,000 from the Chinese Government during a celebratory event at the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, highlighted this contribution as a testament to China’s ongoing commitment to women’s development in Fiji.

During the event, attended by notable figures including First Lady Emily Lalabalavu and other dignitaries, the significance of this donation was emphasized as a symbol of collaboration between China and Fiji in empowering women. Manager of the Fijiana Sevens Team, Luse Kotobalavu, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the support, noting its impact not only on the team but also on women in rugby as a whole.

Kotobalavu stated, “The Fijiana Sevens Team is a shining example of what can be achieved when women are given the opportunity.” She also described the athletes as role models and ambassadors of Fiji, showcasing the power of women in sports.

Ambassador Zhou remarked on the optimistic outlook for the future of women’s development in Fiji, envisioning a robust partnership in this area over the next decade.

This recent support from the Chinese government aligns with broader initiatives undertaken by the Fijian government, which has committed over $4.2 million to foster women’s participation in sports, thereby reinforcing the notion that the promotion of gender equality in athletics is gaining momentum in the country.

As the Fijiana Sevens Team continues to prepare for upcoming international competitions, including the Dubai Sevens, the backing from both the Chinese government and local authorities exemplifies a growing recognition of the importance of supporting female athletes. This collective effort not only empowers current players but also sets an inspiring precedent for future generations of female athletes in Fiji.

This supportive environment is crucial for nurturing talented athletes and creating pathways for women’s rugby in Fiji, illustrating the positive steps being taken towards equality in sports.
