Following the powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake that hit Port Vila, Vanuatu on December 17, which resulted in numerous casualties and extensive damage, China has rapidly mobilized humanitarian aid to assist in recovery operations.
In a significant relief effort, a shipment containing emergency supplies departed from Shenzhen Baoan International Airport in southern China on Wednesday evening. The cargo includes essential items such as tents, folding beds, water purification systems, solar lamps, emergency food supplies, and medical materials. The plane is scheduled to arrive in Port Vila early on Thursday morning.
In addition to this immediate support, the Chinese government has committed $1 million in emergency assistance to enhance Vanuatu’s disaster management and reconstruction initiatives. This commitment was announced by Li Ming, a spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency.
Furthermore, Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang has expressed solidarity by visiting the families of Chinese nationals affected by the earthquake, offering condolences and ensuring ongoing support during this difficult time.
At the request of the Vanuatu government, China has also deployed four engineering experts to provide assistance in the post-earthquake response. This deployment marks a noteworthy milestone, as it is the first time an emergency post-disaster assessment team from China has been sent to a Pacific island, highlighting China’s dedication to building regional partnerships and delivering humanitarian aid.
Spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed that the swift action by China illustrates its commitment to aiding Vanuatu in its recovery and rebuilding efforts. As both countries collaborate on addressing the consequences of this catastrophic event, there is a sense of hope that the combined efforts will lead to resilience and a stronger path forward for the people of Vanuatu.
