In the wake of the destructive 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Port Vila, Vanuatu on December 17, China has swiftly initiated humanitarian support to assist in the nation’s recovery efforts. The earthquake resulted in numerous casualties and extensive damage, prompting urgent relief measures.
On Wednesday evening, a flight carrying emergency relief supplies departed from Shenzhen Baoan International Airport in southern China. The cargo included essential items such as tents, folding beds, water purification systems, solar lamps, emergency food supplies, and medical materials. The aircraft is anticipated to land in Port Vila at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Thursday, as confirmed by civil aviation authorities.
Furthermore, the Chinese government has committed $1 million in emergency aid to enhance Vanuatu’s disaster response and reconstruction initiatives, as announced by Li Ming, a spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency.
Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang took the time to visit families of Chinese nationals who perished in the disaster, offering condolences and reaffirming ongoing support during this difficult time.
At the request of the Vanuatu government, China has also dispatched four engineering experts to assist in post-earthquake recovery efforts. This deployment marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time China has sent an emergency post-disaster assessment team to a Pacific island nation, highlighting China’s dedication to regional partnerships and humanitarian assistance.
Spokesperson Mao Ning underscored that China’s prompt action showcases its commitment to aiding Vanuatu in recovering and rebuilding from the calamity.
As relief operations progress, both China and Vanuatu are collaborating to tackle the immediate and long-lasting effects of this significant natural disaster, showcasing international solidarity in times of crisis.
