In the wake of the significant 7.3-magnitude earthquake that hit Port Vila, Vanuatu on December 17, causing considerable destruction and loss of life, China has taken prompt action to provide humanitarian aid to assist the island nation in its recovery efforts.
On Wednesday, emergency relief supplies were dispatched from Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, with the cargo comprising essential items such as tents, folding beds, water purification units, solar lamps, emergency food, and medical supplies. The shipment is scheduled to arrive in Port Vila early Thursday morning, facilitating immediate assistance to those affected.
In addition to the supplies, the Chinese government has committed $1 million in emergency funding to support Vanuatu’s disaster response initiatives, as confirmed by Li Ming, spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency.
Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang also reached out to the families of Chinese citizens who sadly perished in the earthquake, offering condolences and promising continued support during this difficult time.
Responding to a request from the Vanuatu government, China has dispatched four engineering experts to further bolster post-earthquake recovery efforts. This initiative marks a significant step, as it is the first occasion China has sent an emergency assessment team to a Pacific island, highlighting its commitment to fostering regional cooperation and delivering humanitarian support.
According to spokesperson Mao Ning, China’s rapid response underlines its dedication to helping Vanuatu as it navigates the challenges of recovery and rebuilding.
