“China Rallies Support for Vanuatu After Devastating Earthquake”

Following the devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake that shook Port Vila, Vanuatu on December 17, resulting in substantial casualties and property destruction, China has swiftly mobilized humanitarian aid to assist the Pacific island nation in its recovery efforts.

A cargo flight loaded with emergency relief supplies departed from Shenzhen Baoan International Airport and is expected to arrive in Port Vila early Thursday morning. The consignment includes critical items such as tents, folding beds, water purification systems, solar lamps, emergency food supplies, and medical materials, aimed at providing immediate support to those affected by the disaster.

In addition to the supplies, the Chinese government has announced a financial pledge of $1 million (USD) to strengthen Vanuatu’s disaster response and reconstruction initiatives. This commitment was made known by Li Ming, spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency.

Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang also took the time to visit families of Chinese nationals who perished in the earthquake, offering his condolences and reaffirming China’s ongoing support during these trying times.

Responding to a request from Vanuatu’s government, China has sent a team of four engineering experts to assist in recovery activities. This gesture marks a significant moment as it is the first deployment of an emergency post-disaster assessment team by China to a Pacific island nation, highlighting the robust regional partnerships and commitment to humanitarian aid.
