Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, recently concluded a three-day visit to Taveuni that brought significant aid and support to the local community. During his visit, Mr. Zhou interacted with the Chinese community, provided gifts and stationery to the Somosomo District School, and donated over 40 solar streetlights valued at approximately $82,000 to Somosomo Village. This initiative is part of China’s ongoing commitment to assist Fiji in various developmental projects, particularly in rural areas.
Zhou’s visit marked his first trip to Taveuni, coinciding with Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s traditional vakasenuqanuqa celebration. District Officer Apisai Vularaka expressed gratitude towards the Chinese Embassy and the Government of China for their generous support and the effort Mr. Zhou made to engage with villagers, students, and teachers.
This visit holds special significance as it coincides with two important anniversaries: the 50th year of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, and the 170th anniversary of Chinese immigrants arriving in Fiji. Mr. Zhou encouraged the local Chinese community to embrace their heritage while contributing to the nation’s development, expressing his hope for them to invigorate the entrepreneurial spirit that has defined their history in the region.
Reflecting on his previous experience as an English teacher, Mr. Zhou connected with the students at the school, encouraging them to dedicate themselves to their studies and build a future in Fiji. He promised that cooperation between China and Fiji would continue, with additional scholarships available for Fijian students to pursue education in Chinese universities.
Ultimately, the donation of solar streetlights is not only a practical support for the local infrastructure but also symbolizes China’s commitment to supporting Fiji in its rural revitalization, climate action efforts, and overall development goals. Mr. Zhou’s visit underscored the strong bonds between the Chinese community and the greater Fijian society, fostering hope for continued collaboration and mutual growth in the years to come.
