China has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing Belt and Road cooperation with Fiji, revealing an array of upcoming projects and initiatives that aim to fortify economic ties and support the national development priorities of Fiji. This commitment was articulated by Chargé d’Affaires Wang Yuan during a recent briefing for the launch of a commemorative cover celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji.
Wang emphasized that Fiji is a crucial partner in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), indicating China’s intention to deepen collaboration in traditional sectors such as infrastructure, trade, agriculture, and fisheries. In addition, he mentioned the ambition to expand into new areas including poverty alleviation, low-carbon development, digital technology, and e-commerce.
The Chargé d’Affaires highlighted that China aims to synchronize the BRI and the Global Development Initiative with Fiji’s development plans, particularly aligning with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. He asserted, “Our cooperation will be more strategic, more targeted, and more responsive to Fiji’s needs.” Furthermore, he indicated that this next phase of cooperation would consist of both significant infrastructure partnerships and a series of community-focused “small yet smart” development programs designed to directly benefit households, farmers, and local businesses.
Noteworthy development initiatives include plans for introducing practical technologies to Fiji, such as enhancing the use of Juncao and improving rice-growing systems, both of which have demonstrated positive effects on food security in other developing regions. Wang also acknowledged potential collaborations in green energy, climate resilience, and low-carbon development, underlining their importance for Fiji’s long-term sustainability.
As 2024 approaches, marking five decades of diplomatic relations, Wang sees this anniversary as an opportunity to embark on a new chapter in the partnership, potentially bringing about significant advancements for both nations. This commitment has the potential to create sustainable growth and innovation in Fiji, benefiting its citizens and enhancing regional cooperation.
