A significant shipment of emergency relief supplies from the Chinese government arrived in Port Vila, Vanuatu on Thursday. This aid package, weighing 35 tonnes, comprises essential items such as tents, folding beds, solar lights, food, water purification equipment, and medical supplies.
This assistance is a response to the severe earthquake that struck Port Vila on December 17, which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale. The quake resulted in the tragic loss of at least 14 lives, left over 200 individuals injured, and caused substantial damage to the city’s infrastructure.
During the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu, Li Minggang, expressed deep understanding of the devastation caused by the earthquake. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to stand in solidarity with Vanuatu and support its recovery efforts. Caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai was also in attendance and voiced his gratitude for China’s timely support, highlighting the critical role of international assistance in Vanuatu’s recovery journey.
This act of solidarity emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis, showcasing how nations can come together to aid those in need. Vanuatu now has the opportunity to rebuild and recover, strengthened by the support of its international partners.
