China and Fiji Strengthen Ties: A Partnership for Progress in the Pacific

China considers Fiji a key cooperation partner in the South Pacific region. This sentiment was expressed by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during his meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing on Sunday.

Premier Li noted that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China. Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that Fiji views China as a dependable partner, adhering to the one-China principle while supporting the Belt and Road Initiative and other collaborative programs.

Rabuka indicated that Fiji is eager to enhance cooperation with China in various areas, including economy and trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity, aiming to create new opportunities for their bilateral relationship.

Li affirmed China’s unwavering support for Fiji’s chosen developmental path and expressed readiness to collaborate with Fiji to fulfill the agreements made between their leaders.

“China will strive to be a true friend of Fiji, one that trusts and supports each other, while enhancing exchanges at all levels. We will promote the steady growth of our comprehensive strategic partnership to benefit both peoples,” Li stated.

The Premier added that both nations should utilize their complementary strengths to deepen collaboration in infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation under the high-quality Belt and Road initiative framework.

He also mentioned that China plans to import more products from Fiji and support Chinese investments in the nation.

Li stated that China backs Pacific Island countries in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. Additionally, China intends to work closely with Fiji and other island nations to advance the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilisation Initiative, aiming for a fair and balanced multipolar world and inclusive global economic growth.
