China and Fiji Forge Closer Trade Ties Before Pacific Summit

China has committed to enhancing its trade relations with Fiji during a recent meeting in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed support for Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s “Ocean of Peace” initiative ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) scheduled to take place in Tonga.

China’s support comes as Fiji seeks to modernize its port, shipbuilding capabilities, road networks, and sewage systems, which require improved terms for its agricultural and fisheries sectors due to significant debts, as reported by state media.

“China appreciates Prime Minister Rabuka’s vision for an Ocean of Peace and is dedicated to collaborating with Fiji to promote international peace and security,” Mr. Xi stated in a release on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Rabuka is set to attend the PIF next week, which involves leaders from 18 Pacific island nations and territories, and will discuss a regional policing proposal supported by Australia.

Before embarking on his 10-day tour in China, Mr. Rabuka emphasized his intention to maintain stability in regional security amid the ongoing competition for influence between China and the U.S. After reclaiming his position as prime minister in 2022, he has been advocating for the “Ocean of Peace” diplomatic policy, which encourages engagement with major powers while preventing militarization in the Pacific Islands.

“I am very much encouraged by your principles and ideas on peaceful coexistence and progress; they align with my vision for the Ocean of Peace,” Mr. Rabuka conveyed to Mr. Xi, indicating he would highlight the Chinese leader’s backing of his plan at the upcoming PIF.
