China is eager to establish direct flights between the Chinese mainland and Fiji “as soon as possible,” according to China’s ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian.

During an event in Suva last week marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Ambassador Zhou expressed his country’s commitment to collaborating with Fiji to initiate these direct flights. He addressed an audience that included government ministers and Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

Zhou emphasized that such direct flights would attract more Chinese tourists to Fiji, benefiting the Fijian economy. He also extended an invitation for Fijians to visit China and explore its numerous offerings.

In his remarks, Ambassador Zhou highlighted the importance of mutual cooperation in strengthening the Fiji-China relationship. He stated that the call for direct flights aligns with China’s efforts to enhance people-to-people exchanges, noting, “Amity between the people holds the key to sound state-to-state relations.”

The ambassador reaffirmed China’s commitment to continuing cultural exchanges, mentioning plans to send art troupes and medical teams, as well as offering scholarships from the Chinese government to promote understanding between the two nations.

Efforts to increase Fiji’s visibility as a tourist destination in China are already underway. Last year, a three-year strategic Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Tourism Fiji, Fiji Airways, and Trip.com Group, aimed at boosting Fiji’s profile in the Greater China market and promoting the “Where Happiness Comes Naturally” tourism brand.

Currently, flights from Fiji to China are facilitated through a codeshare agreement with Hong Kong Airlines.
