Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Zhou Jian, recently spoke about the need to strengthen cooperation between China and Fiji in response to what he termed as the United States’ unilateralism and economic coercion. He highlighted that the U.S. represents only 13% of global trade, indicating significant growth potential for over 190 countries that make up the remaining 87%.
Ambassador Jian emphasized that China is committed to being a source of opportunities, advocating for collaboration instead of conflict. “In a world full of uncertainties, China will continue to seek to join hands rather than throwing punches,” he stated, asserting that removing barriers and promoting connectivity are essential for a stable global economy. He added that trade wars and protectionism are detrimental, calling for a focus on extensive consultation and equality in addressing international differences.
This message resonates with ongoing discussions about Fiji and China’s partnership, previously underscored during celebrations of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, where the importance of mutual respect and development was highlighted. Both nations aim to enhance trade and investment across various sectors, including agriculture and infrastructure, while exploring opportunities in green development and e-commerce.
Such efforts signify a proactive approach to creating a stable economic environment and fostering resilience in the face of global challenges. The emphasis on cooperation and mutual understanding indicates a hopeful pathway for both nations, paving the way for potential prosperity and sustained growth.
As the dynamics of international relations evolve, Fiji’s strengthening ties with China reflect a broader commitment to building constructive partnerships based on shared interests and respect for national sovereignty.
