Chilling Surge in Violent Crimes Linked to Family Ties

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has reported that a 55-year-old man has been charged with deliberately seeking to cause serious harm to his 5-year-old stepdaughter. The charge stems from allegations that he injured the child by striking her on the back with a cane knife.

In the ODPP’s Serious Crime (Non-Sexual Violence Offences) Statistics for August 2024, it was noted that 18 individuals were charged with a total of 28 non-sexual violence offenses that month. The report highlighted that there were 14 victims involved in these offenses, and six of the cases revealed a familial relationship between the accused and the victims.

In another case, a 48-year-old man faces a murder charge for allegedly stabbing his 76-year-old father multiple times, leading to the elder man’s death.

Additionally, a 33-year-old man has been charged with attempting to cause serious harm to his 34-year-old de facto partner, reportedly using a spade in the attack. He is also facing charges for breaching a domestic violence restraining order and violating a suspended sentence.

There was also an incident involving a 34-year-old man charged with intentional harm and attempted arson. He allegedly attacked his 39-year-old brother with a spade and tried to set his brother’s house ablaze.

A 25-year-old man is accused of causing serious harm to a 48-year-old man, reportedly involving punches and kicks during a disagreement. Another case involves a 44-year-old man who has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm to his de facto partner, along with aggravated burglary and criminal intimidation related to thefts during house and shop break-ins and street robberies.

Furthermore, four men aged 24, 34, 20, and 19 were charged with aggravated robbery for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a 14-year-old boy.

Lastly, a 31-year-old man has been charged with unlawful cultivation and possession of illicit drugs after allegedly growing 94 cannabis plants and possessing over 3 kilograms of cannabis. In a separate case, a 30-year-old man faces charges for cultivating 347 cannabis plants.
