Child Welfare at Risk: Are Parents Doing Enough?

Concerns are rising over child safety as Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the need to prioritize the welfare of children. This statement follows an incident where a toddler was discovered wandering alone along Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu and subsequently taken to a police station by two women.

In a public appeal on Facebook, the police sought assistance in identifying the child’s parents or guardians. Fortunately, the toddler was reunited with his family after the post gained significant attention online. ACP Chew indicated that the police would thoroughly investigate instances of child neglect and could pursue legal action against parents or guardians where negligence is found.

“This is not the first such case we have encountered,” ACP Chew noted. He expressed concern over the recurring nature of these incidents, citing previous cases involving serious harm to children, including drowning and severe accidents. “All these were due to lack of supervision or neglect by parents and guardians. These tragedies could have been prevented with better supervision.”

He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, highlighting that children’s curiosity can lead to dangerous situations in mere seconds.

In a related call to action, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran addressed the incident, urging all caregivers to be attentive to their children’s whereabouts. She referenced a recent tragic event in Naitonitoni, Navua, where a one-year-old boy lost his life after being struck by a vehicle, having left home unnoticed.

“The issue of child protection is something we really have to think about,” Kiran remarked. She acknowledged the challenges of childcare in urban settings but emphasized the importance of finding appropriate support to prevent neglect, reminding that even a moment of inattention can lead to irreversible consequences.
