The welfare of children must be a top priority to avoid tragedies, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew. His remarks came in response to an incident where a toddler was found wandering alone along Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu and later taken to a police station by two women.
Commissioner Chew stated that law enforcement would follow all necessary steps to investigate child neglect cases. In a recent Facebook post, the police sought assistance from the public to identify the toddler’s parents or guardians, successfully reuniting the child with their family after the post gained attention.
He emphasized that for such incidents, police would examine aspects of negligence that could lead to legal charges against parents and guardians. “This is not the first case we have encountered,” Chew remarked, expressing concern about repeated incidents of child neglect. He highlighted past events where children suffered serious injuries or even fatalities due to inadequate supervision.
Chew stressed the need for vigilance among parents and guardians, noting the inquisitive nature of young children and how quickly accidents can occur.
Meanwhile, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran urged parents and guardians to prioritize the welfare of children and remain aware of their whereabouts. She referenced a recent tragic incident involving a one-year-old boy who died in Navua after allegedly being struck by a vehicle, emphasizing the importance of child protection.
Kiran acknowledged the challenges faced by parents, particularly in urban areas, in finding adequate childcare support but insisted that it is crucial to prevent neglect and ensure the safety of children.
