Concerns have been raised over child welfare following a recent incident where a toddler was found wandering alone on Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the need to prioritize children’s safety to prevent tragedies. The toddler was taken to a police station after two women discovered him and, following a viral appeal on social media, was later reunited with his family.
Commissioner Chew stated that police would thoroughly investigate cases of child neglect and could pursue legal charges against parents or guardians if negligence is suspected. He noted that this incident is not isolated, pointing out that there have been other unfortunate cases involving children suffering serious harm due to lack of supervision.
“We urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant,” Commissioner Chew said, highlighting that a few seconds of inattention can lead to serious consequences for young children, who are naturally curious.
In response to the situation, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran called on all parents and guardians to be more mindful of their children’s whereabouts. She acknowledged the challenges faced by nuclear families, especially in urban areas, but stressed the importance of seeking support to ensure child welfare. The minister recalled a tragic event last week in which a one-year-old boy lost his life after being struck by a vehicle, emphasizing the critical need for child protection measures.
