Child Neglect: A Call for Urgent Vigilance

Concerns over child safety have risen following a recent incident in which a toddler was found wandering alone near Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the necessity of prioritizing children’s welfare, stating that tragedies are inevitable if this is overlooked.

The toddler was discovered by two women and taken to a nearby police station. In response, police have appealed to the public through social media to help identify the child’s parents or guardians. Fortunately, the toddler was reunited with his family after the post gained traction online.

Commissioner Chew highlighted that the police will explore potential negligence in these cases, which could lead to legal consequences for the parents or guardians involved. He noted that this is not an isolated incident, and warned that previous cases have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities due to lack of supervision.

He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, reminding them that children’s curiosity can lead to dangers occurring in mere moments.

Additionally, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran addressed the issue, urging all caregivers to ensure they know the whereabouts of their children. She reflected on the tragic death of a one-year-old boy in Navua who was hit by a vehicle after leaving home unnoticed last week.

Kiran acknowledged the challenges of childcare for nuclear families in urban areas but stressed the importance of seeking support to prevent neglect. She reiterated that protecting children is a critical issue that requires urgent attention.
