Members of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) recently held a moment of silence in remembrance of two esteemed former members who have passed away: the high chief of Rotuma and the Turaga Na Tui Yale of Kadavu. This solemn acknowledgment was confirmed by GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula during a media briefing at the morning tea break.

Additionally, Attorney-General Graham Leung is anticipated to address the Chiefs during the meeting regarding proposed village bylaws. The two-day gathering includes leaders and representatives from all 14 provinces, focusing on important matters concerning the i-Taukei community.

Key topics of discussion will revolve around three pivotal papers: an evaluation of i-Taukei administration, a feasibility study on the decentralization of economic units, and legislative updates on issues affecting the i-Taukei populace. Noteworthy attendees include His Excellency, the President, along with the Turaga Bale Na Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

This meeting marks a significant moment for the GCC as it confronts crucial challenges while honoring the legacy of its departed leaders. The ongoing discussions not only reflect a commitment to addressing pressing issues but also highlight the unity and resilience of the i-Taukei community. As they navigate through these matters, there is hope for positive changes and advancements in the community’s welfare.
