Flying Fijians forwards coach Graham Dewes is set to join the Waikato Chiefs for the 2025 Shop and Save Super Rugby Pacific season. Recognized for his expertise in scrummaging, Dewes’s arrival comes on the heels of Fiji’s impressive quarterfinal performance in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, making him a valuable asset for the Chiefs management.

Alongside Dewes, Jono Gibbes, the head coach of the New Zealand Under 20s team, will take on the role of assistant coach for the Chiefs. Dewes has a rich history with the franchise, having previously played for Counties Manukau and Thames Valley, and has represented Fiji in 28 matches, contributing to their success during the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

Chiefs Chief Executive Simon Graafhuis expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Dewes and Gibbes, pointing out that Dewes’s transition from NPC coaching to international levels is a significant advancement, and his experience will greatly benefit the team. Dewes himself expressed his excitement about the opportunity, highlighting the chance to work with top-tier players and coaching staff.

Gibbes, who returned to the Chiefs in a Resource Coach role for the 2024 season, has already made substantial contributions to the club. Graafhuis noted the respect he commands from both players and staff, and anticipates further positive developments in the team’s growth with his extended involvement.

Overall, the Chiefs seem to be positioning themselves for a strong season ahead, leveraging the experience of both Dewes and Gibbes to build a competitive team. Their renewed focus on enhancing team dynamics and performance bodes well for the franchise’s future in Super Rugby.

Hoping for continued success, the Chiefs and their new coaching staff have the potential to elevate their game and make a remarkable impact in the upcoming season.
