Chiefs in the northern region of Fiji have expressed their endorsement for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as the next President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed on Tuesday that Ratu Naiqama is the Government’s nominee for the position.
Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, the Tui Nadogo, expressed his support for the Government’s choice while emphasizing the importance of including the chiefs in the decision-making process. He noted that while they respect the Government’s decision and its constitutional powers, input from the Great Council of Chiefs is crucial to ensure that the iTaukei people are adequately represented.
Meanwhile, Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, highlighted the necessity for a leader who embodies justice and integrity, though he chose to remain neutral regarding his support for the Government’s nominee, Ratu Naiqama. Ratu Maivalili stressed that Fiji requires a leader capable of unifying all districts and provinces, advocating for equality across the nation.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, who has led the country for the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. Ratu Maivalili reiterated that the next President should uphold Christian values and possess a vision to propel the nation forward with stable leadership, regardless of their leadership style compared to predecessors.
Efforts to reach Ratu Jone Qomate, the Tui Labasa, for comments were unsuccessful.
