Traditional leaders in northern Fiji have rallied behind their paramount chief, the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the candidate for the next President of Fiji.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced on Tuesday that Ratu Naiqama is the official nominee of the Government. Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, expressed his support for the nomination while emphasizing the importance of including the chiefs’ voices in the decision-making process. He stated that while they respect the Government’s choice, it is crucial for the Great Council of Chiefs to have input to ensure representation for the iTaukei people, the traditional custodians of the land.

Similarly, Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, echoed the sentiment that the presidential candidate should embody justice and righteousness. When asked directly about supporting the Government’s nominee, he maintained a neutral stance, highlighting the need for a leader capable of uniting all districts and provinces in Fiji. Ratu Maivalili emphasized the importance of a leader who promotes equality and acknowledged the contributions of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors.

He asserted that the next President should have a strong moral compass rooted in Christian values, which he believes are foundational to the nation. Ratu Maivalili stressed the necessity for a visionary leader to guide Fiji toward stability and progress while indicating their readiness to respect the next President, regardless of differing leadership styles from past leaders.

Efforts to reach the Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for comment were unsuccessful.
