Chiefs from the northern regions of Fiji have expressed their backing for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as the next President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed on Tuesday that the government has nominated Ratu Naiqama for the position.
Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, the Tui Nadogo, voiced his support for the government’s nominee but emphasized the importance of including chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the government’s authority while suggesting that the Great Council of Chiefs should have a role in appointments to ensure proper representation for the iTaukei, the indigenous custodians of the land.
Ratu Joseva Maivalili, the Tui Wailevu, stated that it is essential to have a leader who embodies justice and righteousness. When asked about his stance on the government’s nominee, he chose to remain neutral. He stressed the need for a unifying figure who can bridge the various districts and provinces in Fiji, advocating for a leader who promotes equality among the people.
Ratu Maivalili also took a moment to commend the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, the Tui Macuata, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. He reiterated that the next President should have a strong moral compass and respect the Christian values that underpin Fijian society.
He underscored the need for a visionary leader to guide the nation toward a more stable future. Attempts to reach Ratu Jone Qomate, the Tui Labasa, for his perspective were unsuccessful.
