Chiefs from the Northern region of Fiji have expressed their support for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as the next President of Fiji. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka revealed that Ratu Naiqama is the government’s nominated candidate for the role.

Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, the Tui Nadogo, stated his backing for the government’s nominee while emphasizing the importance of including chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the government’s authority but insisted that appointments should reflect the voice of the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure the representation of the iTaukei, the indigenous custodians of the land.

Ratu Joseva Maivalili, the Tui Wailevu, expressed the need for a presidential candidate who embodies justice and righteousness. When asked specifically about his support for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, he chose to remain neutral but highlighted the necessity of a leader who can unify all districts and provinces in Fiji. He pointed out that the people deserve a leader who promotes equality.

Ratu Maivalili also praised the current President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his leadership over the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. He underscored the need for the next President to be guided by a fear of God and respect for Christian values, which have historically underpinned the nation.

He stressed the importance of having a visionary leader capable of advancing Fiji with a stable leadership style. Efforts to reach the Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for comment were unsuccessful.
