Leaders in the Northern region have expressed their backing for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as the next President of Fiji.
During a recent announcement, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that Ratu Naiqama is the government’s nominee for the presidential position. Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, expressed his support for the government’s choice but emphasized the importance of including the chiefs in the decision-making process. He noted the significance of having a voice from the Great Council of Chiefs to ensure that the iTaukei community, as guardians of the land, has representation.
On the other hand, Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, stated he believes in electing a leader who embodies justice and fairness. However, when asked about supporting the government’s nominee, he chose to remain neutral. Ratu Maivalili stressed the need for a leader who can unify all districts and provinces within Fiji and highlighted the necessity for a leader who promotes equality among the populace.
He acknowledged the contributions of the current President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, who has led the country for the past four years, wishing him well in his future endeavors. Ratu Maivalili emphasized that the next President should have a deep respect for God and the principles of Christianity, which form the foundation of the nation.
He also highlighted the need for a visionary leader capable of guiding Fiji towards a more stable future. Attempts to reach Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for his input were unsuccessful.
