Members of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) held a poignant moment of silence to honor two recently deceased former members: the high chief of Rotuma and the Turaga Na Tui Yale of Kadavu. This solemn occasion was confirmed by GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula during a media address at the morning tea break.

The ongoing two-day assembly gathers chiefs and representatives from Fiji’s 14 provinces to tackle pressing issues concerning the i-Taukei community. Today’s agenda includes an important address from Attorney-General Graham Leung, who is expected to discuss the proposed village bylaws.

Discussions at the meeting will focus on three significant topics: reviewing the i-Taukei administration, assessing the feasibility of decentralizing economic units, and providing updates on legislation that adversely affects the i-Taukei people. Distinguished attendees include His Excellency the President and the Turaga Bale Na Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the conference takes place at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

As the meeting progresses, it aims to foster dialogue and work towards solutions that can positively impact the future of the i-Taukei community. Engaging in discussions on critical administrative and economic matters signals a proactive approach to preserving cultural integrity and promoting community welfare.

This meeting reflects the resilience and dedication of the i-Taukei leadership to address challenges and pursue progressive solutions for their communities.
