Graham Dewes, the forwards coach for the Flying Fijians, has been announced as the new scrum coach for the Waikato Chiefs for the upcoming 2025 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season. Chiefs management sees Dewes as a valuable asset, especially in light of Fiji’s impressive quarterfinal run during the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Alongside Dewes, Jono Gibbes, who currently serves as head coach for New Zealand Under 20s, will also be joining the Chiefs in an assistant coaching role. Dewes has a history with the Chiefs, having played for Counties Manukau and Thames Valley, and he represented Fiji in 28 matches, contributing to their memorable 2007 World Cup Quarter Finals appearance.
Chiefs Chief Executive Simon Graafhuis expressed enthusiasm over the addition of Dewes and Gibbes, recognizing the significant coaching experience they bring. Graafhuis noted, “Graham has jumped the ranks a bit by going from NPC to international coaching, but having the experience he’s gained with us for the coming season will be a real asset.”
Dewes himself shared his excitement about joining the Chiefs, stating, “I’m honoured to join the Chiefs rugby family as scrum coach for 2025. This is an incredible opportunity to work alongside world-class players, coaching staff, and management. I’m excited for the challenges ahead and eager to build on the strong foundation already set in place.”
Gibbes, who rejoined the Chiefs in a Resource Coach role in 2024, has already made significant contributions and will now enhance the coaching team’s depth as the franchise prepares for the upcoming season. Graafhuis highlighted Gibbes’ respect among players and staff, expressing optimism for the team’s development under his guidance.
This new coaching lineup positions the Waikato Chiefs for an exciting future, combining Dewes’ international experience with Gibbes’ proven coaching acumen, ensuring promising prospects for the team in the competitive landscape of Super Rugby.
