Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo has emphasized the necessity for the proposed Counter Narcotics Bureau to implement measures focused on the destruction of illicit drugs. He advocates for the practice to include videotaping the destruction process to ensure transparency and legality, while also addressing safety concerns.
Temo pointed out that storing seized drugs in police stations poses significant risks, particularly the potential for raids. He expressed his hope that Fiji does not reach a state similar to Colombia, where drug-related violence is rampant.
Acknowledging the ongoing efforts by authorities, particularly the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Temo expressed satisfaction with their commitment to supporting police in the fight against drug crime. However, he raised concerns about Fiji’s role as a transit point for drugs, highlighting the challenges even powerful nations like the United States face in combatting drug-related issues.
He has called upon the Ministry of Home Affairs to play a supportive role in these efforts.
This situation presents an opportunity for Fiji to strengthen its legal framework concerning narcotics and enhance inter-agency collaboration. With proactive measures, there is hope that the nation can effectively address drug crimes and safeguard its future.
As Fiji continues to confront drug challenges, the unified approach among law enforcement agencies and strong support from judicial counsel may pave the way for more effective and safer communities.
