Chief Justice Sets High Bar for Fiji’s New Lawyers

Chief Justice Salesi Temo addressed a group of 24 new lawyers from the University of Fiji as they were officially admitted to the Bar of the High Court. During a stirring ceremony, he emphasized the significance and responsibilities that come with the legal profession, reminding the graduates that they are now officers of the court who will play a crucial role in upholding the law and ensuring justice for all.

Justice Temo described the law as a vital component of societal structure, stating, “The law, which is fundamental to the concept of the rule of law, is what holds society together.” He warned that any breakdown in adherence to the law could lead to chaos and harm individuals. The Chief Justice underscored the importance of interpreting and upholding the law, highlighting that lawyers have an essential duty to protect people’s rights and to promote fair legal processes.

He advised the newly admitted lawyers to approach their responsibilities with integrity and professionalism, urging them to treat clients fairly and work diligently for their interests. Justice Temo further encouraged the graduates to view themselves as future leaders in the legal field, reinforcing the idea that their reputation will significantly influence their careers. “If you are a hard-working lawyer, your reputation will flourish in the marketplace,” he stated.

Moreover, Justice Temo pointed out the challenges and expectations that accompany their new roles, reminding them that their conduct will reflect on the legal profession as a whole. This call for integrity and ethical behavior resonates with previous speeches he has given, in which he has consistently highlighted the need for good conduct in fostering public trust in the justice system.

As these new legal practitioners embark on their journeys, they carry the potential to bring about positive change in both the legal community and society. With a strong emphasis on ethical standards, diligence, and commitment to justice, the future of the legal profession in Fiji looks promising. The Chief Justice’s encouraging words serve as a hopeful reminder of the important role that these lawyers will play in upholding the rule of law and promoting equity in governance.
