President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take proactive measures to safeguard his community from the escalating issue of illicit drugs. During the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held at Tamavua Village in Suva yesterday, he voiced his concerns regarding the rising drug use throughout the nation.
Ratu Wiliame emphasized the necessity for collective efforts aimed at improving the province, stating that the community must collaborate with its youth to tackle the pervasive social challenges faced by society. He expressed his worries about the harmful impact of drugs on the youth and the implications for both current and future generations, calling for unity among the vanua and churches to protect children.
He highlighted the importance of reinforcing cultural values and respect for elders within families and the community. Additionally, he encouraged school dropouts to pursue education in technical schools, which would help them address social issues and contribute positively to community development.
Ratu Wiliame urged the community to avoid blaming others and instead take responsibility for addressing these challenges, proposing a comprehensive village profiling initiative to aid the government in providing focused assistance for the benefit of Naitasiri residents.
Furthermore, he urged the locals to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by embracing healthier dietary habits. He referenced data from the Ministry of Health revealing that 80 percent of deaths result from NCDs, prompting a call for the province to reflect on how they can combat this problem. He encouraged the community to draw inspiration from the dietary practices of their ancestors, advocating for the consumption of locally grown food.
