Chaudhry Slams PM’s New Appointments as ‘Irresponsible’ Amid Economic Crisis

Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has condemned Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent announcement of appointing three new Ministers and three Assistant Ministers, calling it an “irresponsible” act. Chaudhry expressed concerns about the expansion of an already bloated government during a time when Fiji is grappling with severe economic challenges.

In his statement, Chaudhry warned that the additional appointments could cost taxpayers an estimated $4 million annually. He criticized the Prime Minister for prioritizing his political standing over addressing pressing issues, including the high cost of living, unemployment, and rising crime rates. According to Chaudhry, this government expansion fails to provide any real solutions to the chronic problems facing ordinary citizens.

He noted that Rabuka had previously complained about an increased workload due to underperforming ministers and suggested that it would have been more prudent for the Prime Minister to replace these ineffective individuals rather than enlarging the Cabinet. Chaudhry further asserted that citizens are increasingly dissatisfied with their leaders, who he believes are more focused on their self-interests than on addressing the needs of the public.

Speculation among some members of Rabuka’s party suggests that the cabinet expansion might be a temporary strategy to secure political support as elections approach. However, Chaudhry remains skeptical that such superficial changes will alleviate the ongoing issues plaguing the nation.

Chaudhry’s critique resonates with a growing public sentiment for greater accountability from the government, highlighting the need for meaningful dialogue on governance and reform. While Fiji faces significant challenges, the emphasis on responsible leadership could foster community engagement and motivate political action aimed at creating a better future for its citizens.

This ongoing discussion about governance not only highlights the need for urgent reforms but also introduces a hopeful perspective on the possibility of more accountable leadership that prioritizes the well-being of the Fijian people.
