Chaudhry Slams PM’s Ministerial Expansion as Irresponsible Tax Burden

Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has expressed strong criticism toward Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent decision to appoint three new Ministers and three Assistant Ministers, labeling the act as “irresponsible.” In his statement, Chaudhry highlighted concerns over expanding a government that is already perceived as bloated, particularly amid the serious economic challenges facing Fiji.

Chaudhry warned that these appointments could impose an additional financial burden on taxpayers of approximately $4 million annually, which he deemed unjustifiable given the current state of public finances and the economy. He argued that rather than increasing cabinet size, the Prime Minister should have focused on replacing underperforming ministers to improve governance efficiency.

Public dissatisfaction with the current administration’s performance adds weight to Chaudhry’s remarks. He noted that many citizens feel their leaders are more concerned with self-interest and securing political support rather than effectively addressing pressing issues such as the high cost of living, unemployment, rising crime rates, corruption, and deteriorating infrastructure.

Chaudhry mentioned that speculation among insiders suggests this cabinet expansion could be a temporary tactic by Rabuka to consolidate support as elections approach, although he expressed skepticism about the potential effectiveness of such superficial changes. Instead, he insists that mere adjustments in the Cabinet will not adequately address the underlying problems that plague the nation.

This critique from Chaudhry resonates with a broader public sentiment calling for greater accountability and effective governance from the government. The ongoing discourse around responsible leadership emphasizes the necessity of genuine reform as Fiji navigates through its political and economic challenges.

In light of this situation, there is a hopeful outlook that this push for accountability could foster community engagement and inspire discussions aimed at meaningful reform, paving the way for a government that truly prioritizes the well-being of its citizens and the future of Fiji.
