Former Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, has expressed support for the recent dismissal of Lynda Tabuya as Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Child Protection due to confirmed reports of her gross misconduct. He emphasized that Tabuya should not continue as a Member of Parliament either.
Chaudhry criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for not taking action earlier regarding allegations against Tabuya during an official visit to Australia, which had previously led to her removal as deputy leader of the People’s Alliance Party.
He stated, “The question now is whether Tabuya should be allowed to remain a Member of Parliament? We say, definitely not.” He called for other Members of Parliament to uphold the integrity of the institution by referring Tabuya to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee for expulsion. Furthermore, Chaudhry urged for a police investigation into alleged drug and pornography offenses related to her conduct.
This situation underscores the importance of accountability and ethical standards in political office. As discussions continue, there’s hope that Fiji’s political landscape can move forward by emphasizing transparency and integrity, setting a precedent for future conduct among public officials.
In summary, Chaudhry calls for not just Tabuya’s dismissal but also her expulsion from Parliament, urging further investigation into serious allegations against her.
