Illustration of Tabuya shouldn’t remain a MP: Chaudhry

Chaudhry Calls for Tabuya’s Expulsion: What’s Next for Fiji’s Parliament?

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has expressed his satisfaction over the removal of Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Social Welfare, and Child Protection due to allegations of gross misconduct. However, he believes that her dismissal should extend beyond her ministerial role and that she should also be removed from her position as a Member of Parliament.

Chaudhry emphasized that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka missed an opportunity to prevent potential embarrassment for his government when similar reports concerning Tabuya surfaced during her official visit to Australia. At that time, she was already stripped of her position as deputy leader of the People’s Alliance Party.

He urged his fellow Members of Parliament to reflect on the gravity of the situation and take swift action against Tabuya, advocating for her referral to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee with the aim of expelling her from Parliament. Furthermore, he suggested that the police conduct an independent investigation into claims of drug and pornography-related offences associated with her conduct.

This situation raises important questions about accountability and the standards expected of public officials. As the political landscape evolves, there is hope that this incident will lead to a more rigorous examination of ethical conduct within government, fostering an environment where integrity and respect for public service are paramount.
