Former Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, has expressed his support for the recent dismissal of Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Social Welfare, and Child Protection due to confirmed instances of gross misconduct. Chaudhry has called for Tabuya to also be removed as a Member of Parliament, emphasizing that she should not retain her position in light of her actions.
He pointed out that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka missed an opportunity to save both his government and the People’s Alliance from public embarrassment by not addressing earlier allegations against Tabuya during an official visit to Australia, which ultimately led to her removal as deputy leader of the party.
“The question now is whether Tabuya should be allowed to remain a Member of Parliament. We say, definitely not,” Chaudhry stated. He believes that the integrity and decorum of Parliament are at stake, urging fellow MPs to take action by referring her case to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee for potential expulsion. He also suggested that the matter should be investigated further by law enforcement regarding allegations of drug-related and pornography offences.
This situation underscores the importance of accountability within political leadership. Chaudhry’s call for both parliamentary action and police investigation illustrates the ongoing commitment to uphold the values and integrity expected of public officials. It is a reminder of the significance of ethical conduct in government roles, which is vital for maintaining public trust.
In these challenging times, it is hopeful to see leaders take a strong stand against misconduct, which can lead to a more accountable and responsible governance framework in Fiji.
