Mahendra Chaudhry, the former Prime Minister of Fiji and Leader of the Fiji Labour Party, has expressed support for the recent dismissal of Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Social Welfare, and Child Protection due to confirmed misconduct allegations. Chaudhry believes that her actions not only warranted her removal from the ministerial role but also question her suitability to remain a Member of Parliament.

Chaudhry criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for not taking earlier action regarding Tabuya’s misconduct during an official visit to Australia, where she was previously stripped of her role as deputy leader of the People’s Alliance Party. He asserts that swift actions back then could have prevented embarrassment for the government and the party.

Chaudhry is calling for immediate action from fellow MPs, urging them to uphold the integrity of Parliament by referring Tabuya to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee for potential expulsion. He has also suggested that the matter should be further investigated by law enforcement in relation to possible drug and pornography offences.

The situation serves as a reminder of the need for accountability and integrity among public officials, highlighting the importance of upholding the standards expected from elected representatives. While this incident may raise concerns about parliamentary conduct, it opens the door for a more transparent and principled political environment in Fiji going forward.

In summary, Chaudhry’s stance underscores the ongoing debate about ethical behavior in government positions and the consequences for those who fail to meet expected standards.
