Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasizes the need for a sincere approach to the Truth and Reconciliation process, expressing concerns over the composition of the recently announced Commission. He points out the lack of domestic funding, citing that the European Union (EU) will fund the Commission’s Chair while Australia and New Zealand cover the majority of its costs. Chaudhry implies that such external involvement may influence the Commission’s outcomes significantly.

He lamented the reliance on wealthier neighbors and international partners for funding issues that should fall under local responsibility. In his statement, Chaudhry criticized the opening remarks made by the Commission Chair, suggesting that the initiative could devolve into an academic exercise instead of a genuine quest for the truth regarding the tumultuous events surrounding the coups and their aftermath.

Chaudhry stressed the rights of victims and their families from the three coups to seek truth and justice, reaffirming that true reconciliation can only occur when justice is served. The Commission is led by Dr. Marcus Brand, an Austrian who has significant experience with transitional justice and historical injustices. Alongside him are four local commissioners: former Chief Magistrate Sekove Naqiolevu, gender consultant Ana Laqeretabua, human rights advocate Rachna Nath, and retired pilot Rajendra Dass.

The Commission is mandated to begin preparations within 14 days, followed by three months of preparatory work, after which it will operate for an extended period of 18 months.

This process represents a crucial step in addressing historical grievances in Fiji and moving toward a more unified future. If approached with integrity, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to justice, it has the potential to foster healing and reconciliation in the community while ensuring that victims’ voices are heard and acknowledged.
