Chasing Dreams: Rupeni Kabu Sets His Sights on National Rugby Glory

Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for another leg of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. He hopes to earn a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for any of the upcoming tournaments next year. Kabu made his world tournament debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, following noteworthy performances at the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that same year.

Kabu acknowledges the challenges that come with being part of the extended squad. “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself,” he stated. It is a dream for many young rugby players to compete alongside the elite athletes of the national team, and Kabu shares this aspiration, hoping for another opportunity in one of the legs.

In addition to his ambitions for the national team, Kabu also aims to secure a professional contract overseas. His rugby journey began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, before advancing to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and also playing for the Police Blues sevens team.

The young athlete expressed gratitude for the mentorship he has received from senior players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu. He noted that he has learned significant lessons about discipline from these seasoned players and aspires to inspire the next generation of players.

The national sevens squad resumed their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) after the Christmas break, with plans to enter camp next week. Kolinisau will assemble a team for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, ahead of the selection for the Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.

This determination reflects Kabu’s dedication and passion for rugby, embodying the spirit of perseverance that athletes thrive on. His journey could serve as inspiration for many young athletes in Fiji and beyond, showcasing how passion combined with hard work can lead to opportunities.
